The Academy of Sciences and Humanties in Hamburg was founded in December 2004 by the Hamburg Parliament as a statutory body (academy act, ordinance on its statutes).
Up to 80 ordinary members belong to the Academy, as well as emeriti ordinary members, corresponding members, and honorary members. The gerneral assembly of ordinary members elects the President, the Vice President and two additional members of the board, and also passes resolutions on all fundamental matters to the Academy. The assembly of members meets once every month during a semester.
The President runs the Academy and represents it both internally and externally.
The Manging Director is responsible for administering the ongoing business of the Academy, manages the budget, and participates in an advisory capacity in all board meetings. The Academy’s work is assisted by an administrative office.
