Cooperations and Memberships

The Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg is linked through its Members with almost every research institution, in universities or external to them, throughout Northern Germany. It offers a forum for interdisciplinary dialogue and permits collaboration between representatives of different institutions and fields.

The Corresponding Members help build the Academy’s national and international research network and lay the foundation for collaboration with other research institutions in Germany and abroad.

National Cooperations and Memberships

Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities

The Academy is the newest Member of the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities (“Academies Union”), which unites eight Academies of Sciences in Germany, which collaborate at different levels. In all there are more than 2000 scholars and scientists from different fields working in the Member Academies. The Academies Union coordinates the Academies Programme – Germany’s largest research programme in the humanities. Further, it promotes communication between the Academies and organises events on current themes in scholarship, as well as an annual joint day of scholarship, the Academies’ Day (Akademientag).

Universität Hamburg

The Academy’s long-term projects in the framework of the Academies Programme are conducted in close cooperation with the Universität Hamburg. The Academy makes available to the University the resources granted from the Academies Programme for staff and materials, while the University provides the premises needed and the technical infrastructure as its contribution.

Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study e. V. (HIAS)

The Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg is one of eight founding members of the Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study e. V. (HIAS). It was founded in late September 2019 as an association with its seat in Hamburg and pursues, above all, the goal of inviting visiting scholars (Fellows) from Germany and abroad to carry out research projects of their own choice in Hamburg and so to create an open meeting-place together with the Hamburg scholarly and scientific community.

International Cooperations and Memberships

As a member of the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg is represented in various international associations of Academies and research organisations, such as ALLEA (All European Academies), IAP (InterAcademy Partnership) and UAI (Union Académique Internationale): https://www.akademienunion.de/en/union/cooperations

Since 2019 there have also been bilateral cooperation agreements with the national Academies of the Baltic countries:

These cooperations form the keystone for future international exchanges between the various Academy Members and younger researchers. In the longer term it is intended to establish a shared network of scientists and scholars, in order to enable closer cooperation in research projects.

The Academy is striving to build its international network even more widely through further cooperation agreements, above all in Northern Europe.
