Projects in manuscript studies
Round Table im Rahmen der Summer School „Working in Manuscript Studies: Traditional and New Approaches, with a focus on the Ethiopian and Eritrean tradition “ vom 04. bis 15.09.2023
Recent years have seen an increase of projects in manuscript and manuscript-related studies using a vast array of approaches. A number of these are being featured in this year's Summer School "Working in Manuscript Studies: Traditional and New Approaches" at Universität Hamburg.
These include the projects funded by the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg, Beta maṣāḥǝft: Manuscripts of Ethiopia and Eritrea, Etymologika: Ordnung und Interpretation des Wissens in griechisch-byzantinischen Lexika, the projects hosted by the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures at Universität Hamburg, the ERC-funded project DiDip – From Digital to Distant Diplomatics (Graz), just to name a few.
Several more projects get a chance to be introduced in a public discussion on 11 September 2023, including two more focusing on Ethiopic written culture: Documenting an Ancient Education System in Africa: ʾAbǝnnat Tǝmhǝrt in Ethiopia (Gerda Henkel Foundation) and Sustainable Lalibela (CNRS), as well as BeInf – Beyond Influence: The Connected Histories of Ethiopic and Syriac Christianity (ERC) and Formulae - Litterae - Chartae (Academy of Sciences in Hamburg).
The project presentations shall be followed by round table discussion highlighting the variety of approaches used in manuscript analysis as well as the changes the digital turn may (or may not) have brought about for the respective fields of research.
Documenting an Ancient Education System in Africa: ʾAbǝnnat Tǝmhǝrt in Ethiopia (Mersha Alehegne, Tsehay Ademe, Addisie Yalew)
