Philological Practices. A Comparative Historical Lexicon

Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Anne Eusterschulte, Prof. Dr. Martin Kern, Prof. Dr. Glenn W. Most

The three of us are currently co-editing a large collaborative and international one-volume lexicon of indigenous terminology for philological practices, agents, materials, genres, and institutions that are used by textual traditions throughout the world, from japan to the maya, and throughout human history, from the mesopotamian civilizations to the current day. Our presentation will discuss the history and conception of this project, will illustrate some of the issues and themes presented by various chapters such as those on ancient Greece, modern Western philology, and Chinese textual scholarship, and will close with indications of some of the conceptual problems we are dealing with.

Anne Eusterschulte is Professor of History of Philosophy at Freie Universität Berlin. Her research areas include intellecutal history, aesthetics, medieval and early modern philosophy, contemporary social philosophy, and the intersections of philosophy and philologies from a transcultural perspective.

Martin Kern is the Joanna and Greg Zeluck '84 P13 P18 Professor in Asian Studies at Princeton University. He works on the textual culture of ancient China.

Glenn W. Most retired in November 2020 as Professor of Greek Philology at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, and remains an External Scientific Member of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin and a regular Visiting Professor on the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. He works on ancient Greek, the Greco-Roman Classical tradition, and other Classical traditions.
