“Green Growth” has been a frequently heard buzzword in the research and policy consulting arenas for a number of years now. Researchers from a multitude of disciplines postulate a shift away from a relatively exclusive focus on economic growth towards a growth paradigm that takes into account challenges such as resource scarcity, climate change or growing inequalities. Several governments have already reacted and see Green Growth as a promising strategy to overcome the shortcomings of the current growth model.

The aim of the conference is to serve as a platform for young researchers to challenge the concept of Green Growth from different angles by presenting their work while at the same time attempting a roundup of the research that has been already done on the topic. Because the idea of Green Growth is truly interdisciplinary, the conference is to bring together researchers from different disciplines to discuss what their research fields can contribute to the idea of Green Growth, and to take a critical look at the limitations of Green Growth strategies and their implementation. The conference features a roundtable discussion with distinguished speakers, a practical session on “strategies for research in interdisciplinary teams” and a best paper award of 500 Euro.

Speakers

Prof. Dr. Christine Blättler holds a chair for philosophy of science at the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel. Her research fields include philosophy and history of science as well as philosophy of culture and social sciences. She is a member of the DFG-Network 'Sprachen des Sammelns'.

Nathalie Girouard is the coordinator for OECD work on green growth and sustainable development. She is also running the new OECD Green Growth and Sustainable Development Forum, a multi-disciplinary dialogue aiming to facilitate the sharing of policy analysis and experiences among countries and across sectors.

Dr. habil. Ulrich Hoffmann is the head of the Trade and Sustainable Development Section at the secretariat of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva. He is a member of the steering group of the FAO/IFOAM/UNCTAD International Task Force on Harmoni-zation and Equivalence in Organic Agriculture and the FAO/IFOAM/UNCTAD project on facilitating global market access for organic produce.

Prof. Dr. Mojib Latif is Head of the Research Division “Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics” and Head of the Research Unit “Marine Meteorology” at the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (GEOMAR). His research interests cover seasonal to interannual variability and anthropogenic climate change.

Dr. Joerg Mayer-Ries is Head of the Division “General Aspects of Environmental Policy, Sustainability and Environmental Protection Strategies” at the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. His fields of activity are environmental and sustainability policy, strategic aspects of environmental and sustainability policy and innovation and research policy.

Dr. Sonja Peterson is Scientific Director of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and deputy head of the department 'The Environment and Natural Resources'. Her current research topics include international and European environmental and climate policy, bioenergy and the role of technology transfer for climate policy.

Prof. Dennis J. Snower, PhD, is President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and Professor of Economics at the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel. He is Director of the Global Economic Symposium and Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research (London), at IZA (Institute for the Future of Work, Bonn), and CESifo (Munich).

Where and when?

The conference takes place on November 15-16, 2012, and will be hosted by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW). It is funded by the Akademie der Wissenschaften in Hamburg within the conference scheme “Forum Junge Wissenschaft”.
